Care for Animals as a Veterinary Tech

Caring for pets has become big business today and offers a rewarding career as a veterinary technician for those who want to care for animals and at the same time find satisfaction that you are keeping them in good health. A two year program that is accredited through the American Veterinary Association is offered at most schools and will provide you with an Associates Degree that is enough for a job with a vet or a clinic or you can choose to obtain a four year Bachelors Degree.

As a veterinary technician you will have direct access to animals and be able to assist the veterinarian with preparing the animals for surgery and caring for them afterwards. You will perform routine laboratory procedures, collect specimens and administer medications and shots as directed by the veterinarian. You will also have a lot of direct contact with pet owners and provide advice on how to administer medications and other treatments necessary for animals.

Animals, like humans, have on-going conditions such as heart problems, cancer, broken bones and any number of traumas that are associated with any medical center. A veterinarian’s office or a clinic offers a long-term career with the possibility of later working for a zoo or larger facilities where more specialized care might be needed – as well as the opportunity to work with animals other than dogs and cats which are mostly what you will see in a veterinary’s office.

Many veterinarian offices or clinics offer training opportunities to start out working up front with the customers as they come in – register them, take down medical data and weigh the animals or prepare the “patient” rooms for the next patient. It gives you a chance to decide if that is the career for you – but if you love animals and want to help them – then this is probably a good choice for you.
